how to turn a tgz or zip into a code repo

If your favorite free libre open source project is only available as a tgz or zip (ie umlet) you can now easily turn it into a fully viewable & searchable code repository by using github or google code svn !
You can then use ohloh.net to analyse the code for you !

Simply

sign up for a github or google code svn account
CREATE a new repo (ie http://github.com/osde8info/UMLet)
download tgz or zip
untgz or unzip
ADD files to repo
COMMIT files to repo
(if using github you may also need to 'remote add' and 'push')
add enlistment to ohloh (ie git://github.com/osde8info/UMLet.git)

Sit back and enjoy the ohloh.net code analysis and stats !

ltsp is good

Found out today that ltsp works a treat even on very very old hardware. Amd 700 mhz just fine shows Google Earth a treat. More http://ltsp.sourceforge.net/

Flash slowing my pc

You may have noticed your PC slowing down. I did a little bit of monitoring today and the problem - for me at least - is the countless and mostly unnecessary adverts and flash movies. eg sites like the BBC - that clock on the top right uses 10% of my CPU.

Fortunately there is an add-on for Firefox 2 and 3 which turns off flash movies until you want to play them.

Use Tools - Add-ons - click get extensions and search for flashblock then click add to firefox.

Anonymous Proxy Servers hide the IP address of your PC and thereby reduce unauthorized access to your computer through the Internet. They do not provide anyone with your IP address and effectively hide any information about you and your reading interests. Besides that, they don't even let anyone know that you are surfing through a proxy server.

Had a fantastic day yesterday at the Adobe OnAir AIR 2008 Tour in London.

Adobe AIR brings Rich Internet Applications to the desktop of all three OS's ! You can use AIR to turn HTML file(s) and JavaScript file(s) into an executable for ANY platform - its a bit like "JVM + FileSystem + SQLite" !

AIR uses WebKit and is therefore compatible with your favorite JavaScript framework and even Google Gears !

Install the runtime, and check out the newest applications.

Yahoo! flickr & upcoming Web 2.0 (3.0) social media mashup !

Yahoo! have actually built a web 2.0 (3.0) mashup into their Upcoming site !

I just clicked on the "My Scrapbook" link and got a mashup of my last months (upcoming) events together with all the associated photos (presumably it uses yahoo flick upcoming machine tags and api) !
